When something is obviously wrong, I take action. I don't let things fester, and I don't look the other way. Most clients expect their lawyer to possess this quality.
I first appreciated this aspect of my personality in the eighth grade. Back then, all girls had to take home ec and all boys got to take shop. One day I was required to do a report on...the toaster. I literally had to stand up in public and say, "and this is the crumb tray." I realized at that demoralizing moment that things had to change.
It was a clear case of gender inequity. The boys got to make stuff in ceramics and woodworking, and I was stuck with the @#$ crumb tray! I loudly observed to school officials that this was illegal, and I was transferred immediately into shop class. (That presented a different set of challenges, the class then consisting of me and twenty-five 8th grade boys...) But the next year and forever after: boys and girls all took the same classes.
When you have a Toaster Incident, I'll be on your side.
